As the days get longer and the evenings darker, we start to stay in the warm and concentrate on indoor chores or hobbies. At the shop we have managed to make 400 bottles of apple juice, so we decided the best way to enjoy it through the winter is to make spiced winter wine with apple, cinnamon and ginger.
Here’s the recipe. (All the ingredients can be bought from the shop except the whiskey! Even the honey is local.): 1 bottle sweet crisp whitewine; 1 litre apple juice; 1 cinnamon stick; 4 shots whiskey; 8 tsp honey. Place the wine, juice and cinnamon into a pan and warm gently on a low heat for 30 minutes and then serve into mugs with half a shot of whiskey and a tsp of local honey in each. Serves 8.
Alternatively, for a warming drink all the family can enjoy try this delicious spiced apple juice: 1 litre apple juice; 1 cinnamon stick; 2 inches ginger sliced; 2 star anise; 4 cloves; Thin strips orange zest; Honey to taste. Place all the ingredients in a pan and simmer for 10-15 mins, add the honey to taste.
Our ladies on a Friday are enjoying the cosy evenings making all manner of beautiful items. Lately, they have turned to making an octopus for the premature babies on the unit I work on. The tentacles are curly and imitate the umbilical cord so that, instead of holding onto their breathing and feeding tubes, the little ones hold their octopus tentacles instead. It is great to see what projects everyone is working on. All are welcome to come along and join in or share their own project with everyone.
Of course, we must now start thinking about Christmas too! If you would like to have some of the delicious Barkham Blue, Waterloo and Wigmore for your cheese plate, then don’t forget to place your order by November 17th. There is a limited availability of this locally made cheese leading up to Christmas so don’t miss out on this treat.
This year, our Christmas Shopping Evening will be Wednesday 15th November 6pm-8.30pm. We will have more stalls and local suppliers to browse and taste, giving you inspiration for the big day. Then all you need to do is place an order with us and collect on Saturday 23rd December with no worries about queues and running out of items. It will all be packed ready for you to just pay and collect.
The children’s gingerbread house decorating event will be held on Wednesday 13th December. This must be booked in advance due to its popularity so give us a quick call so you don’t miss out.
This week we had another of our visits from a four-legged friend, a very cuddly ball of fluff with muddy paws who came all the way from Spencers Wood on a little adventure! He decided to stop at our church where we took him to the local vet and he eventually got reunited with his owner. It always amazes us how our church becomes a safe haven for so many unexpected visitors and that is the reason we opened the shop – to be available to help those in need, 7 days a week. Last month, the village combined with the shop staff to host a Macmillan coffee morning in the Memorial Hall. The total raised was an amazing £535. Congratulations must be given to Carole Woodson and Nicola Brigginshaw for creating such a great community event.
Karen was inspired by all the cakes to devise a new winter menu for the tearoom. This will be a trio of desserts: a gingerbread biscuit, a mince pie and a scone made with mulled plum jam. If you haven’t tasted this jam yet you have really missed something scrummy, as well as our mince pies which are the best I have ever had.
It’s going to be a busy time for us all, but if you would like a bit of peace and a rest, come along for a fresh cup of tea and browse all our new Christmas items. These will go on sale very soon and include some beautiful decorations and advent calendars.
If you haven’t done so yet and you would like to nominate us for the Countryside Alliance Awards, there is still time until November 13th. We are in the community shop and post office category.
Many thanks for all your unwavering support. It’s what makes every day a special one!
