This time of year is when we start anew. I heard someone say it’s a mid-year new year! With the children changing schools or going off to university, it’s about new starts for many of us. It certainly seems true for the shop because, sadly, we are having to saygoodbye to our new Assistant Manager, Karen, who has been offered a new job managing a community cafe in Reading, just as she wasgetting the swing of how things go in Beech Hill. We will be sad to see Karen go but we never know what life brings us and, if an opportunity arises, we must grasp it and give it a chance.
Consequently, we have decided to have another look at how we run the shop andhave decided that maybe it would be better to have a team of people supporting Jude who could maybe work one day a week and
increase that to two or three on the weeks Jude is away on holiday, to cover the shop. Of course, if we heard from someone who was interested in doing more than that, we would not turn them away!
Do you know someone who would enjoy working on a community project? Or someone who would enjoy getting out and having company for a day, who would value being part of a team? If so, tell them about our new vacancy and ask them to give Jude a call to discuss it on 0118 327 2645.
Working within a social enterprise is incredibly humbling and rewarding. It is very different to high pressure commercial enterprises. It is great fun and is fulfilling on a daily basis.
This week, the shop moved outdoors again. This time, just across the road to the village fete. A great day was had by all and a lot of sweets were sold by the shop. Many of our suppliers were also at the fete, which was a great way to showcase some of the lovely things we sell. Already, we have started thinking about Christmas and have set the shopping evening date to Wednesday 15th November – so save that date.
Don’t forget, we can take the stress out of Christmas and put the fun back in. Just place your orders on our new
look website (www.bhvshop.co.uk) by the deadline.
Of course, it is also that timeof year when we ask our customers to consider voting for us in the Countryside Alliance Awards. They’re judged on quality of comments, not quantity, and we have been so close but haven’t quite reached the winner stage yet. If you would like to vote, the details can be found here: www.countryside-alliance.org/caawards. We are in the category for post office / community shops. The closing date for votes is November 13th.
We are lucky to have some wonderful customers who are very complimentary about the shop. At the moment, a particular couple of gentlemen come to mind. They always pop in on a Monday for a hot chocolate and a bacon butty. They enjoy the visit so much that, recently, they’ve been coming in almost every day and, on one day, they came in twice!
With the cooler weather upon us, we welcome back homemade soup to our menu but our creamteas have been so very popular this year that we will continue serving them for a little while. So,come and see what flavour soup is on the menu this week or join us for a hot chocolate mountain instead!
