Will the north wind blow and will we get snow? Every year, at this time, we wonder whether we will get a white Christmas and maybe, by the time this is published, we already have. I always have mixed feelings on snow since becoming stranded with my children in a severe flurry a few years ago. I love snow if I am at home safe with plenty of firewood and no work to go to but, if any kind of journey is required, I start to dislike it again!
Since opening the shop in 2013, we have not really had a downfall the size of what we have had in previous years. It is when this occurs that our little village shops become a huge blessing. It would be great to see how we can provide support to our village and beyond but, equally I think for now, I will pray for some snow on Christmas Eve and then a thaw two days later!
The children, of course, pray daily from now onwards for snow. We can’t give them snow at the shop but we can give them gingerbread! We will be holding our gingerbread house decorating evening for the children again this year. This will take place on Thursday 15th December at 4pm. The houses will be built by myself and Jude, ready for the children to ice and add the hundreds of different sweets we supply them with! The cost is £8 per house and we will also have some cookies for the younger children who can’t quite manage a whole house. Booking is essential for this event as places are limited.
The following weekend, on Saturday 17th December, is Beech Hill’s Children’s Christmas Party. We will be showing a Christmas film as well as crafts, food and a visit from that very special man. So, if you would like to bring your children along, just give Sam or Jude a call in the shop to let us know and arrange gift delivery.
If you have not felt Christmassy enough by then, we also have the Beech Hill St Mary’s Church Carol Service on Sunday 18th December. This is a beautiful candlelit event with the local brass band playing along with the carols and the compulsory mince pie and mulled wine to follow. If you have not been before, it really is a wonderful time of year to visit the church.
Leading into Christmas, we would like to partake in the giving advent calendar idea. This means that, instead of receiving a gift on each day of advent, you give one in the form of a food item which can be collected and sent to our local food bank. Each day, we will have a basket for the day on display for that day's giving and, after advent, the goods will be distributed. Alternatively, if you do not have time to send something every day, why not send us an order via the website (www.bhvshop.co.uk) and we will fill the basket on your behalf!
The order forms for Christmas are now on the website, so have a look and send your order through to us by December 20th. Meat orders need to be received by Friday 11th December. We are able to supply all meats including free range turkeys, goose, duck and 3-bird roasts.
We will be open on Christmas Eve until 12 noon for collection of your orders and then we will be closed until January 2nd 2017.
Lastly, we would like to wish all our customers and especially our wonderful band of cheery volunteers, a merry and restful Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. We look forward to hearing about your Christmas celebrations on our return to the shop on January 2nd.
